How DreamMeanings Is Written
Our sources, our method, our limits, and who is responsible for what you read here.
📖 What this site is
DreamMeanings is a reference work on dream symbolism for English speaking readers. It collects what different traditions have said about recurring dream images, alongside what modern psychology and sleep research have found. It is a starting point for reflection, not a verdict on your life.
🛠️ How our interpretations are produced
Every symbol entry on this site is drafted with the help of large language models and then edited before publication. Readers deserve to know that, so we say it plainly rather than hiding it behind a personal byline.
Drafting works from a fixed source set rather than from open ended generation. For each symbol we assemble three things: what the classical dream books recorded, what depth psychology proposed (Freud, Jung, Fromm), and what quantitative dream research actually measured (the Hall and Van de Castle content analysis system, and Domhoff’s later work on dream content). Where those three disagree, the entry says so instead of flattening them into one tidy answer.
🚫 What we do not do
- We do not present folk meanings as fact. When an entry reports that a tradition read a snake as a warning about a hidden enemy, that is a description of what people believed, not a claim about your dream.
- We do not claim predictive power. No symbol on this site tells you what is going to happen.
- We do not give medical or psychological advice. Recurring nightmares, disrupted sleep, or dreams that distress you during waking hours are worth discussing with a qualified professional, not a website.
📚 Sources
Our full source list is published on the Bibliography and Sources page. It covers the depth psychology canon, cultural symbolism references, neuroscience and sleep research, empirical dream studies, lucid dreaming literature, and the classical dream books we cite when describing traditional readings.
🎓 Expert review
We are in the process of establishing external review of our psychology and sleep science content by a qualified specialist. Until a named reviewer is credited on this page, entries on this site carry no expert endorsement: they should be read as an informed summary of published sources and nothing more. We would rather state that openly than imply a credential we do not yet have.
✏️ Corrections
If you find an error, a misattributed source, or a claim we cannot support, write to us and we will correct or remove it. Corrections are made to the entry itself, so the page you read is always the current version.
